Thank you for your patience and continued support as we have been preparing for the upcoming school year.  We have developed a return to school plan specific to Read Mountain in accordance with the guidelines developed by Virginia Department of Education, the Virginia Department of Health and the Center for Disease Control and Prevention.  The operation of the school may be different as a result of these safety measures and we want to ensure you and your child are prepared for the first days of school.

Please view the following videos to prepare your child for their return to school:

RMMS Return to School – New Daily Procedures 2020-2021

BCPS will be issuing every middle school student a Chromebook this school year.  We will be distributing the devices we currently have in our inventory to 8th graders during the first week of school.  Devices for 6th and 7th graders will be arriving in September and will be distributed as soon as possible.  There is a Technology Fee of $25 this school year for all students in grades 5-12.  RMMS will be collecting this fee in the first two weeks of school.  Checks can be made payable to Read Mountain Middle School and will be collected by the student’s first block teacher.  6th grade students participating in the orientation event August 20, 2020 will be able to pay the technology fee during the event.

All students have had their 1770 accounts reset.  They will need to reset their password after logging in to their account with the default password.  Their username is their first and middle initials, last name and the last 2 digits of their student ID number@1770.us.  The default password is: bcps1234  Here is an example:  Username: KJMartin04@1770.us Default Password: BCPS1234.

Should you have a question that we haven’t addressed in the information posted and/or sent home, please feel free to contact us at the school.  Again, thank you for your continued support.  We are certainly looking forward to seeing students next week!

RMMS FAQ - Parents 8_17.pdf

RMMS Parents/Guardians,

On Tuesday, July 21, the BCPS school board met and approved a revised return to school plan.  This revision allows the school division to operate on a schedule that abides by the Phase Guidance for Virginia Schools and adheres to programmatic recommendations to ensure the health and safety of all students and staff.  The revision includes transition to a full in-person schedule, provided that schedule can be supported by the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the Virginia Department of Health (VDH), and the Virginia Department of Education (VDOE).

Here are some highlights of the newly revised return to school plan that impact secondary schools:

School Schedules

  • Hybrid: Students  receive instruction and learn in-person and remotely
  • Group A (Monday/Thursday) & Group B (Tuesday/Friday)
  •  Internet access is not required.

Remote: Students receive instruction and learn outside of the school building.

  • Internet access is strongly recommended.

The first day of school is scheduled for Monday, August 24, 2020

Family Cohorts: Students in the same household will be scheduled in the same cohort (group).

Schedule Changes:

  • Students may participate in 100% remote learning at any time.
  •  Students will only be able to transition from 100% remote learning to the hybrid schedule at the beginning of the second semester.

BCPS will return to full in-person learning as soon as it is safe to do so.  This transition to in-person learning will begin on Wednesdays in October and full in-person learning in January, if permitted by the CDC, VDH, and VDOE.

  • Beginning on the first Wednesday of the second marking period (October 21, 2020), students in grades 3-12 will continue with the hybrid schedule and alternate in-person learning on Wednesdays as designated on the A/B schedule.
  •  Full in-person learning begins on January 5, 2021.

Transportation is provided; however, parents are asked to transport students to the greatest extent possible.

I encourage you to review the attached Instructional Plan and updated school calendar with the understanding that the BCPS School Board has approved Option 3.  General information regarding technology, grading, attendance, processes and systems, athletics and extracurricular activities, transportation, mitigation strategies, communication, and remote learning are included in this attachment.  Information specific to each school will be forthcoming.

We appreciate your patience and support as we work to provide a safe and effective return to school plan.  If you have any questions regarding the return to school please contact the school at 540.966.8655.
